Saudi Handicrafts Make a Striking Impression at Expo 2025 Osaka – Backed by the Cultural Development Fund

14 May 2025

Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage took center stage in Japan as the Cultural Development Fund (CDF) wrapped up its second major activation at Expo 2025 Osaka. Held from May 3 to 9 in partnership with the Saudi Arabia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, the activation showcased “Handicraft Experiences: A Celebration of Art and Innovation” — a tribute to the Year of Saudi Handicrafts 2025.

Drawing more than (6900) visitors, the activation spotlighted a curated selection of Saudi creative projects supported by CDF, featuring immersive experiences led by skilled artisans. The showcase brought Saudi identity to life through modern interpretations of traditional crafts, while underlining the sector’s potential to drive innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.

Among the highlights was the work of artisan and visual artist Hams Almureh, who presented contemporary art pieces inspired by Al-Qatt Al-Asiri — a traditional artform from southern Saudi Arabia. Her pieces were painted on palm fronds using natural pigments derived from local stones and plants, offering a vivid reflection of the Kingdom’s natural and artistic landscapes.

Innovative Saudi fragrance brand Nota Nota invited guests on a multisensory journey through the Kingdom’s aromatic flora — from Taif roses to juniper trees — blending heritage with cutting-edge scent technology. Meanwhile, gifting brand Washi Bloom introduced handcrafted clay gifts incorporating palm leaves and lavender, arranged in the Japanese Ikebana floral design style, creating a unique cultural bridge between Saudi Arabia and Japan.

This activation is one of several initiatives planned by CDF throughout Expo 2025 Osaka, which will span six months. Through panel discussions and cultural activations, the Fund aims to spotlight investment opportunities within Saudi Arabia’s cultural landscape and — while empowering its beneficiaries on the world stage. The broader goal: to attract global investment, inspire creative entrepreneurship, and contribute to reinforcing the Kingdom’s vision for sustainable cultural growth in line with Vision 2030.
